Last Week Virgin Active launched a new class called Pound. After seeing the posters around the gym promoting the class and hearing amazing feedback from friends who have taken it, I decided that I would check the class out for myself.
I checked out the Poundfit.com website and this is how they describe the class:
“Using Ripstix®, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered specifically for exercising, POUND® transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out.
Instead of listening to music, you become the music in this exhilarating full-body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and pilates-inspired movements.
Designed for all fitness levels, POUND® provides the perfect atmosphere for letting loose, getting energized, toning up and rockin’ out! The workout is easily modifiable and the alternative vibe and welcoming philosophy appeals to men and women of all ages and abilities.”
STORY TIME:
Pound was created by two women who were recreational drummers back in 2011. They found that they were growing bored of their everyday Pilates routine and started looking for new ways to reignite the fun in their workouts. One day, they were forced to drum without a stool and squat over the drum kit and this is when they realised that drumming and exercise work extremely well together.

MY EXPERIENCE:
I walked into the class which was made up of mostly women. We each grabbed a yoga mat and were given two Ripstix to use for the class. The class starts off with a warm up, lead by the instructor and the rest of the class is based on series of exercises formulated to give you and all-round workout.
The instructor, Jane Edwards, was CRAZY ENERGETIC. Damn, She was so pumped and her energy was infectious. I didn’t realise how hard the exercises were because she kept the class so motivated throughout. She definitely mirrored the high energy and intensity of the workout.
What was great about this class is that it really is a rockout kind of workout. The music used ranged from Hip Hop to EDM to rock music. And there’s just something about using the drumsticks to keep the rhythm that gets you pumped for the workout. It was defiantly lots of fun and left me feeling ready to take on the day ahead of me. If you’re looking for a great workout class to start your day off, this is the class for you! There were times we were pounding so hard I thought the sticks would break!
I really loved every second of this class, I would recommend it to everyone who is looking to try something new, especially if you’re stuck in your traditional pilates class. This class is what the lovechild of Pilates and Rock ’n Roll would be. It worked my glutes, my abdominals, upper and lower back, arms and legs – if that isn’t a well rounded workout, I don’t know what is! It’s also great for people of all fitness levels and a fun way to get your body in shape!
Check it out at a Virgin Active Health Club near you, you won’t regret it!
